The Mormon Menace

Book by Patrick Mason, The Mormon Menace Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Mormon Menace books, "It incarnates every unclean beast of lust, guile, falsehood, murder, despotism and spiritual wickedness." So wrote a prominent Southern Baptist official in 1899 of Mormonism. Rather than the "quintessential American religion," as it has been dubbed by contemporary scholars, in the late nineteenth century Mormonism was America's most vilified homegrown faith. A vast national campaign featuring politicians, church leaders, social reformers, the press, women's organizations, businessmen, and ordinary citizens sought to end the distinctive Latter-day Saint practice of plural marriage, and to extinguish the entire religion if need be. Placing the movement against polygamy in the context of American and southern history, Mason demonstrates that anti-Mormonism was one of the earliest vehicles for reconciliation between North and South after the Civil War and Reconstruction. Southerners joined with northern reformers and Republicans to endorse the use of newly expanded federal power to vanquish the perceived threat to Christian marriage and the American republic. Anti-Mormonism was a significant intellectual, legal, religious, and cultural phenomenon, but in the South it was also violent. While southerners were concerned about distinctive Mormon beliefs and political practices, they were most alarmed at the "invasion" of Mormon missionaries in their communities and the prospect of their wives and daughters falling prey to polygamy. Moving to defend their homes and their honor against this threat, southerners turned to legislation, to religion, and, most dramatically, to vigilante violence. The Mormon Menace provides new insights into some of the most important discussions of the late nineteenth century and of our own age, including debates over the nature and limits of religious freedom; the contest between the will of the people and the rule of law; and the role of citizens, churches, and the state in regulating and defining marriage.

The Noblest

Book by George R. Hopkins, The Noblest Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Noblest books, It is an honor to have been asked to write an introduction to The Noblest, which is a collection of some of the work of a small group of people from different walks of life who came together in a writing workshop I gave at the John Noble Maritime Museum a few years ago. Together, we shared our writings, we listened to each other, and we grew into a family of friends. As you read their thoughts, their ideas, their stories, you will come to glimpse them as I have been privileged to do. Their poems, stories, and memoirs speak for themselves. They have opened their hearts and souls in their writings. Initially, I did not want to detract from their accomplishments with my own writings, but they are a persistent group and they prevailed. Tread softly as you read our works and enter into our lives. We hope our writing speaks to you and that you find a friend or two in these pages and that the words conjure memories, stimulate imagination, take you to special places, and give you pause to think. May I start you on your journey with a poem of my own. The letters leak from pens and pencils Like twisted linguine from aged grinders Into word salads that whisper feelings Sometimes buried, sometimes throbbing, Sometimes happy, sometimes sobbing. Pictures form of people Living quiet lives in troubled times Laughing, crying, sighing, Dreaming, loving, praying, Probing, wondering, remembering. They are the seasons of the years, The colors of the rainbow. Their images cling and clang, Stir and penetrate, invigorate and celebrate. They sing like the sunrise That while much may be taken Much abides and flourishes. Read our words and listen to our hearts With reverence, kindness, gratefulness and awe And learn once more we are not alone And all of us including you - still have much so much more to give. Thank you, George R. Hopkins

Valor

Book by Mark Lee Greenblatt, Valor Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Valor books, Valor features the thrilling stories that are the fruit of Mark Lee Greenblatt’s interviews with brave American servicemen from twenty-first-century wars. These soldiers, sailors, and Marines have risked their lives several times over for their country as well as for their fellow troops and civilians. Still, until now, their stories have largely gone unnoticed by the public, perhaps lost in the frenzied and often nasty debate surrounding those conflicts. As the author writes, “This generation does not have an Audie Murphy. I set out to change that with this book.” Detailing incredible and evocative feats—including an Army pilot who rescued two fellow pilots from a deadly crash in hostile territory and strapped himself to the helicopter’s exterior for the flight to the hospital—Greenblatt provides glimpses into the minds of these men as they face gut-wrenching decisions and overcome enormous odds. However, this book is much more than tales of riveting action. Each chapter goes beyond linear combat stories to explore each hero’s motivations, dreams, and the genuine emotions that were evoked in the face of extreme danger. Readers will be transported to a variety of settings—from close-quarters urban fighting in Iraq to mountainside ambushes in rural Afghanistan to a midnight rescue in the middle of the Atlantic—as they accompany the men who do not see themselves as heroes but as patriots in the line of duty.
