Chess With The Doomsday Machine

Book by Habib Ahmadzadeh, Chess With The Doomsday Machine Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Chess With The Doomsday Machine books, "Chess with the Doomsday Machine (Shatranj ba Mashin-e Qiamat) is a novel by Habib Ahmadzadeh (b. 1964) about the Iran-Iraq War (1980-88). It is set in Ahmadzadeh's native Abadan, a city located on an island near the Persian Gulf. Because of its importance to the Iranian petroleum industry, Abadan was the target of heavy bombardments during the early stages of the conflict. Using an advanced radar system developed in Europe, Iraqi forces were able to hone in on Iranian artillery emplacements almost as soon as they fired. It is the task of the narrator, a young Basiji (volunteer paramilitary) spotter, to locate the radar so it can be destroyed. The novel paints a striking tableau of a city under siege, not only inhabited - as one would expect - by a variety of soldiers, but also by two Armenian priests, a retired oil refinery engineer, and a prostitute and her young daughter." "Chess with the Doomsday Machine avoids the kind formulaic patriotism and hagiography found in much of "Holy Defense" (defa'-e moqaddas: an official Iranian term for the conflict) fiction in two ways. First, it indulges a type of black humor used in such war satires as Joseph Heller's Catch 22 and, second - and more profoundly - it examines how wartime conditions throw the ephemeral nature of human existence into high relief. As the novel progresses, the narrator's journey evolves from a simple search-and-destroy mission into a quest for meaning among the surreal sights of the besieged city: an improvised "shark aquarium"; a ravaged farmer's market; rows of bombed-out homes; an ice cream freezer that doubles as a morgue; and an incomplete seven-story building that miraculously survives the Iraqi shelling to become the stage for the novel's chief theme."--BOOK JACKET.

Book by Daniel Ellsberg, The Doomsday Machine Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Doomsday Machine books, Shortlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction Finalist for The California Book Award in Nonfiction The San Francisco Chronicle's Best of the Year List Foreign Affairs Best Books of the Year In These Times “Best Books of the Year" Huffington Post's Ten Excellent December Books List LitHub's “Five Books Making News This Week” From the legendary whistle-blower who revealed the Pentagon Papers, an eyewitness exposé of the dangers of America's Top Secret, seventy-year-long nuclear policy that continues to this day. Here, for the first time, former high-level defense analyst Daniel Ellsberg reveals his shocking firsthand account of America's nuclear program in the 1960s. From the remotest air bases in the Pacific Command, where he discovered that the authority to initiate use of nuclear weapons was widely delegated, to the secret plans for general nuclear war under Eisenhower, which, if executed, would cause the near-extinction of humanity, Ellsberg shows that the legacy of this most dangerous arms buildup in the history of civilization--and its proposed renewal under the Trump administration--threatens our very survival. No other insider with high-level access has written so candidly of the nuclear strategy of the late Eisenhower and early Kennedy years, and nothing has fundamentally changed since that era. Framed as a memoir--a chronicle of madness in which Ellsberg acknowledges participating--this gripping exposé reads like a thriller and offers feasible steps we can take to dismantle the existing "doomsday machine" and avoid nuclear catastrophe, returning Ellsberg to his role as whistle-blower. The Doomsday Machine is thus a real-life Dr. Strangelove story and an ultimately hopeful--and powerfully important--book about not just our country, but the future of the world.

Johnny And The Doomsday Machine

Book by David Titcher, Johnny And The Doomsday Machine Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Johnny And The Doomsday Machine books, Twelve-year-old Johnny Fremont is the world's only hope when the Council of Fifty, a secret society of the most evil people on the planet, decides to wipe out the entire Southern Hemisphere with a doomsday machine. Johnny may be only twelve-years-old, but he's been training his entire life for a fabulous Indiana Jones-like adventure. He trains with one motto: if anybody in the world is capable of doing something, then he should be able to do it. If David Blaine can hold his breath for eight minutes, then Johnny should be able to do it for nine. If a fitness guru can swim the English Channel, handcuffed, shackled, and pulling a boat, then Johnny should be able to do it with one hand tied behind his back as well. With this philosophy, Johnny has become the world's smartest and toughest kid. However, he has to pretend to be average at school (he makes sure his grades are all C's, not C pluses or C minuses) so that he won't stick out. Johnny's chance for adventure finally comes when he must track down Albert Einstein's diary, which contains all the extreme secrets of the universe. Einstein hid the diary in his house before he died. For the next sixty years, every government in the world has ransacked and probed the house, searching desperately for the diary, but they came up completely empty. However, when Johnny teams up with Azelia, his arch-nemesis, they find it in one hour. Following the clues that Einstein laid out in his the diary, Johnny and Azelia, arguing every single second, embark on an incredible adventure to save the world from a doomsday machine that destroys the planet every 25,000 years. About the Author: From WGA Award nominated screenwriter David Titcher ("The Librarian: Quest for the Spear," "Around the World in Eighty Days," and "The Curse of King Tut's Tomb").

The Doomsday Machine

Book by Martin Cohen, The Doomsday Machine Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Doomsday Machine books, Today, there are over one hundred nuclear reactors operating in our backyards, from Indian Point in New York to Diablo Canyon in California. Proponents claim that nuclear power is the only viable alternative to fossil fuels, and due to rising energy consumption and the looming threat of global warming, they are pushing for an even greater investment. Here, energy economist Andrew McKillop and social scientist Martin Cohen argue that the nuclear power dream being sold to us is pure fantasy. Debunking the multilayered myth that nuclear energy is cheap, clean, and safe, they demonstrate how landscapes are ravaged in search of the elusive yellowcake to fuel the reactors, and how energy companies and politicians rarely discuss the true costs of nuclear power plants - from the subsidies that build the infrastructure to the unspoken guarantee that the public will pick up the cleanup cost in the event of a meltdown, which can easily top $100 billion dollars.

A book that reveals the contents of Pentagon top-secret papers about the America's nuclear program. A book from the former presidential advisor Daniel Ellsberg who took top-secret pentagon papers and now he is willing to show them all in this book. The end result is chilling. A vast list of the most dangerous weapons that have ever been manufactured and the potential dangers of the current nuclear policies. No other insider has given us so much information about top secret document and this is why is a book of so much value. (Note: This summary is wholly written and published by Abbey Beathan. It is not affiliated with the original author in any way) "Whether rightly or wrongly, we are the only country in the world that believes it won a war by bombing - specifically by bombing cities with weapons of mass destruction, fire bombs, and atomic bombs - and believes that it was fully justified in doing so. It is a dangerous state of mind." - Daniel Ellsberg Ellsberg also does an analysis of how harmful even a small nuclear exchange is. He showed in a nuclear exchange, billions of people and that's just the minimum. If the exchange is bigger then it would be even more fatal. It's quite the revealing title where not only we learn the dangers regarding nuclear weapons, but also Ellsberg teaches us how we can avoid nuclear catastrophe. Ellsberg delivers the shocking truth that is impossible to find through another medium. P.S. The Doomsday Machine is an extremely informative book that gives us an unabridged look to top-secret documents. P.P.S. The film adaptation by Adam McKay (Anchorman I and II, The Other Guys) features Academy Award® winners Christian Bale, Brad Pitt, Melissa Leo and Marisa Tomei; Academy Award® nominees Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling. When the crash of the U.S. stock market became public knowledge in the fall of 2008, it was already old news. The real crash, the silent crash, had taken place over the previous year, in bizarre feeder markets where the sun doesn’t shine and the SEC doesn’t dare, or bother, to tread. Who understood the risk inherent in the assumption of ever-rising real estate prices, a risk compounded daily by the creation of those arcane, artificial securities loosely based on piles of doubtful mortgages? In this fitting sequel to Liar’s Poker, Michael Lewis answers that question in a narrative brimming with indignation and dark humor.
