Behind The Guns

Book by Thaddeus C Brown, Behind The Guns Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Behind The Guns books, Much has been written of the infantry and the cavalry during the Civil War, but little attention has been paid the artillery. Through the battles of Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge in 1863 and the Atlanta Campaign of 1864 and with General Sherman’s forces on the famous March to the Sea, the acts of a courageous fighting group are vividly recounted in Behind the Guns: The History of Battery I, 2nd Regiment, Illinois Light Artillery. Originally published in 1965 in a limited edition, this regimental history of a light artillery unit was written by three of its soldiers, including the bugler. Battery I was formed in 1861 by Charles W. Keith of Joliet and Henry B. Plant of Peoria. More than a hundred men were mustered into service in December near Springfield and left for Cairo in February 1862. The battery trained at Camp Paine across the Ohio River in Kentucky until March, when the men were dispatched to the South. During the war, the Battery was attached to three different armies: the Army of the Mississippi, the Army of the Ohio, and the Army of the Cumberland. Clyde C. Walton’s foreword and the narrative discuss the variety of weapons used by the unit, including James, Parrott, and Rodman guns and the bronze, muzzle-loading Napoleons that fired twelve-pound projectiles. The book also includes an account of the prisoner-of-war experience of Battery I lieutenant Charles McDonald, biographical sketches of the battery soldiers, and eighteen maps and five line drawings.

Three Years Behind The Guns

Book by John B. Tisdale, Three Years Behind The Guns Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Three Years Behind The Guns books, When Commodore George Dewey's Asiatic Squadron sailed into Manila Bay on May 1, 1898 to defeat the Spanish fleet, it marked a major turning point in American history. Aboard Dewey's flagship, Olympia, one very young sailor with a keen eye and agile pen was writing it all down. Having run away from home to join the navy in 1895, Jack Tisdale hoped that he would be lucky enough to land a berth aboard the Olympia—a modern steel protected cruiser and flagship of the US Asiatic Squadron. He ended up getting his wish, and a lot more than he bargained for. Originally published in 1908—a decade after the events described—Three Years Behind the Gunsis an amusing, gritty look at life aboard a man-o'-war at a time when the United States was on the cusp of becoming a great power. Though a memoir, the author writes with all the youthful exuberence of the age, describing his experiences with good humor and verve, even when they stretch the bounds of credulity. There are literal fish-stories here, such as when Jack captures a two-foot long flying fish on the deck, or when his shipmate nearly loses a toe while doing some illicit angling. But there are also descriptions of more somber events, such as the death of a shipmate during gunnery practice, or the midnight wreck of a Chinese steamer. Stories of his adventures at various ports of call are myriad, crowned by his unique perspective on the Battle of Manila Bay as a member of the crew of Olympia's main guns. Tisdale's ship, USS Olympia, still exists to this day as a museum in Philadelphia, PA, where visitors may see how the decorative wood paneling and furniture in the officers quarters contrasts sharply with the painted steel and spartan decks of her crew quarters and engineering spaces. Like the ship, Three Years Behind the Guns is a hybrid—part solid fact, part work of art. Such beautiful mementos of our bygone history deserve to be maintained if for no other reason than as concrete reminders of how we got here.

The Man Behind The Guns

Book by Edward Longacre, The Man Behind The Guns Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Man Behind The Guns books, The deadly accurate guns of the Union artillery were the most feared weapons on Civil War battlefields. General Henry Jackson Hunt, the highest-ranking artillery officer in the Union army, was "the man behind the guns"-the military genius who transformed a disorganized artillery corps into the most effective service arm of the army. Even the Confederates admired General Hunt. One Rebel general once boasted, "Give me Confederate infantry and Union artillery, and I'll whip the world!"The Man Behind the Guns tells the life story of General Hunt, who, by the time he died in 1889, was recognized as one of the finest tacticians and military theorists ever to wear an American uniform. His outstanding reputation, however, had been established years before when his 270 strategically placed cannon shattered Pickett's Charge and decided the outcome of the most significant battle in American history. This classic military biography, published twenty-five years ago and now available for the first time in paperback, is a "must" for every student of Civil War history.

Three Men Behind The Guns Classic Reprint

Book by Charles-Edward Jefferson, Three Men Behind The Guns Classic Reprint Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Three Men Behind The Guns Classic Reprint books, Excerpt from Three Men Behind the Guns The problem to-day, then, is not war but Armed Peace. He who stops to declaim against war is belated. War is conceded to be hell, and by common consent is taboo. But in consecrating itself to Armed Peace, many are be ginning to wonder whether mankind has not jumped out of the frying pan into the fire. At any rate the wealthof Christendom is being consumed. A volume setting forth the cost of armies and navies reminds one of a book on astronomy. The only figures used are millions and billions. A1lfigures; aft'erjhey pass a certain 1imit, . Cease to make a definable impression on the mind. The imag ination is first dazed, and then paralyzed. When one scrutinizes for an hour the tables compiled by the statis ticians showing the cost of Armed Peace, the mind is stupefied and the heart benumbed. The gold is flowing in a widening stream and to squander a people's money is to squander their blood. Governments are to-day not only impoverishing the living, but hanging millstones of debt around the necks of generations yet unborn. Guns are bought With borrowed money. The house is being mortgaged that the foolery may go on. All schemes of internal improvement are curtailed and embarrassed, and every program of social betterment is handicapped or fpostponed. Militarism blights like a pestilential wind the higher life of nations, and eats like a gangrene into the Vitals of civilization. The very sinew and bloom of humanity are going into this expanding establishment of gold braid and steel, and the end is not yet. One thing is certain, the world cannot go on indefinitely in the direc tion in Which it is now moving. Something is going to break. I tremble When I remember that God is just, exclaimed an American statesman When he looked out across the tragedy of slavery, and well may any man Who believes that nations, as well as individuals, are in the grip of inexorable moral law, tremble When he beholds the satanic heartlessness with Which the peoples of Christen dom are being plundered and oppressed by the ever ac cumulative expenditures for the enginery of slaughter. The Guns Of Bull Run Illustrated

Book by Joseph A. Altsheler, The Guns Of Bull Run Illustrated Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Guns Of Bull Run Illustrated books, Harry heard them distinctly and he and his comrade lay more closely than ever in the bushes, because the horsemen, a numerous body, as the heavy tread indicated, were passing very near. The two lads presently saw them riding four abreast toward the campfire, and Harry surmised that they had been scouting in strong force toward the Southern front. They were large men, deep with tan and riding easily. Harry judged their number at two hundred, and the tail of the company would pass alarmingly near the bushes in which his comrade and he lay. Don't you think we'd better creep back? he whispered to St. Clair. Some of them taking a short cut may ride right upon us. Yes, it's time to make ourselves scarce. They turned back, going as rapidly as they dared, but that which Harry had feared came to pass. The rear files of the horsemen, evidently intending to go to the other side of the camp, rode through the low bushes. Four of them passed so near the boys that they caught in the moonlight a glimpse of the two stooping figures. This version includes new illustrations.
